It may sound simple, but first impressions are critical to gaining the attention from hiring managers during the resume review process and interview. Hiring Managers make quick decisions ( sometimes in less than a minute) based on a few important factors.

  1. In general, do I like this candidate?

  2. Does the candidate understand the basics of their company's background, areas of focus and general objectives. This critical information can be easily found on the companies website on the front page and in their public relations section..

  3. Does the candidate understand the role and skills/experience required to be successful?

  4. Is this candidate willing to be trained and potentially enter their organization on the ground floor.

  5. Does the candidate ask insightful open ended questions? This will help to determine if the candidate has done their research both on the company, the specific organization and the role.

  6. Will this candidate work and integrate well with my team? Will the candidate be welcomed and liked?

  7. Will this candidate work with me to take challenges and tasks off my plate and help identify solutions rather than merely finding problems.

Managers do not like to be challenged. They like partnerships and constant communications to ensure the candidates are working on the most important tasks that will allow the team to succeed.

Welcoming contacting their References from previous managers will also help put the hiring manager at ease. Conversations will validate the candidates previous success and ability to integrate quickly into their organization.

Remember these impressions and perceptions are quickly made by the hiring manager. Using the manager's language and focusing on the ability to problem solve is critical to your selection and success in the role.
