Posted jobs either internally or externally may have a large number of applicants. It is not unusual to see several hundred applicants for attractive roles. After reviewing a large number of resumes, applicants will be narrowed down to 10-20 candidates. This narrowed down field of candidates will most likely be contacted for initial interviews.

First impressions are critical and can be formed within just a few minutes. How you appear, engage on the phone or in person can be determined in seconds. Consider these factors;

  • Video conferencing must have good clear lighting and you should be dressed appropriately.

  • Your head and shoulders should fill most of the screen

  • Body language including hand gestures, eye contact and your ability to mirror your interviewer are also critical. Your goal is to put the interviewer at ease.

  • Rehearsing for the interview will help make the meeting conversational, natural and easy. Without practice you might feel nervous and focus on what you need to say instead of actively using your listening skills.

When preparing for your interview you should prepare insightful open ended questions for the manager. This will show that you have done your research. Open ended questions focused on the goals of the team or organization can separate you from your competition.

Showing your flexibility in the role will also help put the interviewer at ease. Managers love to know that candidates are willing to enter on the ground floor and play multiple roles if required.

Don't be afraid to get sensitive issues out on the table. Following your opportunity to ask questions, ask if there is anything about your background or experience that causes any concern with the manager. This will allow you to uncover potential roadblocks that you can address directly during the interview.

Finally, it is important to always ask for next steps. What can you expect for the next stage of the interview process? Following up immediately with a handwritten note or email expressing your interest in the role is a must. Ideally you should have the interviewers email and follow up the same day. This will also show commitment and consistency.

Always stay consistent from one interview to the other. The interviewers, which may be in different parts of the group, will talk and compare notes. Staying consistent with your performances from previous roles or your skills is very important.
